Today I was going to meet with a group of people in Yokohama. I met them thanks to Ninja Monkey, a super fun Japan travel YouTuber with a lovely community that I've been in contact with a lot during and around the trip.
I got up early and took the train in that direction but we were only meeting at noon so I thought I'd explore Kawasaki a bit first. There was in particular an island I wanted to see but turns out that was an hour or three on foot, so the city would have to do for now. It was nice but there wasn't a lot to do but I found a cute small sunny outside station named Anzen and had it all to myself . After filling up on food it was getting late so I took the next train to Yokohama.
It took some effort to find everyone and stick together because everyone had very different paces and interests I feel like 🤣
Still it was nice to meet up for a while, we walked around a bit, and went for a beautiful boat tour, explored the park at the port, visited some shops in the Chinatown. Here's where I lost the others sadly cause I had a secret side quest and accidentally ended up talking to someone for half an hour. The rest of the group still checked out a Christmas market and slowly returned back to their hotels.
It was quite a challenge finding something vegetarian to eat in the Chinatown, but I found a place that sold fried potato balls! They tasted amazing actually, but were extremely filling. Also visited a giant souvenir shop with so many options, mostly bought bags and some sweets, of course I found Yokohama Hello Kitty themed cookies and had to take them for Mizu san!! Then after a lot more walking my energy levels really tanked so I sad down in a quiet park and just did nothing for a while. Suddenly I heard some really amazing Frank Sinatra level singing coming from somewhere nearby, I walked over and it was a small square with a really cozy Christmas market, and the amazing singer (will include a clip!), I felt so enchanted that it made me forget about the low energy 🥹 I bought some hot chocolate and just sat there until the singer stopped. The only thing I regret is not taking longer recordings, or asking for the singer's name.
It was like 7 PM so I slowly walked back to the Yokohama station. But not without seeing the cozy areas around Zou no Hana park (flower elephant park? they actually had elephant statues with flower decorations!),
the red brick warehouse where they also had a big cozy Christmas market
and an ice skating rink but there were some admission fees so I just
walked around (while secretly taking in the cozy atmosphere for free,
hehehe). And right next to that was the futuristic port Minato Mirai
(it's literally called future port (or port future?)) with the all the
buildings from the famous Yokohama skyline, including the little theme
park with the neon ferris wheel peeking out. It was so pretty in the
evening with the lights and the sea and the park surrounding it, the
Japanese really know how to create beauty on another level.
The
rest of the walk back to the station was also incredible, I can
probably repeat myself forever here. Stopped by a konbini on the way to
have some onigiri, the concept may sound so simple, but I couldn't get
enough of those things. On my train back I was wondering why I didn't
actually book something here cause the next day I would be heading in
the same direction but further. But I was happy to come back to
the hostel either way!
